Integrated Digital Enhanced Network

iDEN (Integrated Digital Enhanced Network) is a wireless technology from Motorola combining the capabilities of a digital cellular telephone, two-way radio, alphanumeric pager and data/fax modem in a single network. iDEN operates in the 800 MHz, 900MHz, and 1.5 GHz bands and is based on time division multiple access (TDMA) and GSM architecture. It uses Motorola’s Vector Sum Excited Linear Predictors (VSELP) vocoder for voice compression and QAM modulation to deliver 64 Kbps over a 25 KHz channel. iDEN is designed to give the mobile user quick access to information without having to carry around several devices.

Integrated Digital Enhanced Network (iDEN) is a mobile telecommunications technology, developed by Motorola, which provides its users the benefits of a trunked radio and a cellular telephone. iDEN places more users in a given spectral space, compared to analog cellular and two-way radio systems, by using speech compression and time division multiple access (TDMA).
iDEN stands for Integrated Digital Enhanced Network. It is an enhanced specialized mobile radio network technology that combines two-way radio, telephone, text messaging and data transmission into one network. Utilizing existing 800 MHz SMR frequencies, iDEN converts the analogue SMR channel to an ESMR digital network. Developed by Motorola and used by Nextel, this technology combines digital voice, data, and dispatch radio in one network. It works in the 800MHz and 1,500MHz bands using TDMA networks. One of the more noteworthy features of iDEN is its capability to support dispatch radio service, so users of iDEN handsets can use it for both two-way radio communication and phone calls. Nextel’s iDEN service is a popular choice for workers who need to stay in contact with each other in local areas.

    What is WIDEN

Wideband Integrated Dispatch Enhanced Network, or WiDEN, is a software upgrade developed by Motorola for its iDEN enhanced specialized mobile radio (or ESMR) wireless telephony protocol. WiDEN allows compatible subscriber units to communicate across four 25 kHz channels combined, for up to 100 kbit/s of bandwidth. The protocol is generally considered a 2.5G wireless cellular technology.
