DELHI

Delhi is a palimpsest, bearing the complexities, the contradictions, the beauty and the dynamism of a city where the past coexists with the present. many dynasties ruled from here and the city is rich in the architecture of its monuments. Diverse cultural elements absorbed into the daily life of the city have enriched its character. exploring the city can be a fascinating and rewarding experience

India a land of snake charmers and magicians and the capital of this land of mysteries is Delhi. Delhi is just not a city but it is a book– a book which narrates the history of India. The city was built and destroyed seven times and has been witness to the various events which has brought India through the history books. Seven times this city went through the pain of being built and rebuilt.

Today as the capital of India Delhi is the seat of administration and the monuments which tell the saga of a bygone era stand there. These icons are testimony to the grandeur of past and also an attraction for the tourists. With an area of 1483 sq. Kms, Delhi is all set to acquire full statehood. The charm of Delhi has attracted Emperors, Conquerors and poor in equally. It is correctly said that Delhi is a land of ‘Dilwalas’ or for people with heart. This phrase acquires a true colour when one goes around the lanes of Delhi. Delhi– a window to the kaleidoscope that is India.

Delhi sometimes referred to as Dilli, is the second-largest metropolis in India after Mumbai with a population of 13 million. Located in northern India on the banks of the River Yamuna, Delhi has the political status of a federally-administered union territory known as the National Capital Territory of Delhi (NCT). A constitutional amendment in 1991 gave Delhi a special status among the Union Territories; Delhi has its own legislative assembly with limited powers. The National Capital Territory of Delhi comprises nine districts, 27 tehsils, three statutory towns viz. Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), New Delhi Municipal Committee (NDMC) and Delhi Cantonment Board (DCB), 59 census towns and 165 villages.

Delhi is one of the oldest continually inhabited cities in the world. Having been the capital of several empires in ancient India, Delhi was a major city in the old trade routes from northwest India to the Gangetic Plains. Many ancient monuments, archaeological sites and remains of national importance have been erected in its history. The Mughals built a section of the city (now known as Old City or Old Delhi) that served as the capital of Mughal Empire for a long period. During the British Raj, New Delhi was built as an administrative quarter of the city. New Delhi was declared the capital of India after India gained independence from British rule in 1947. As the seat of the Government of India, New Delhi houses important offices of the federal government, including the Parliament of India. Delhi has grown up to be a cosmopolitan city owing to the immigration of people from across the country. Like many other large cities of the world, Delhi suffers from urbanisation problems such as pollution, traffic congestion and scarcity of resources. The rapid development and urbanisation of New Delhi and surrounding areas coupled with the high average income of the populace has largely eclipsed socio-cultural traits that used to represent Delhi until a few years after independence.

    Red Fort
The Red Fort is one of the Delhi’s major attractions. The fort reminds us the power and wealth of the Mughal Empire. The huge sandstone walls were constructed in the 17th century to keep away the pillaging invaders and till today it dominate the skyline. There is a glut of buildings inside which once served as the living quarters of Shah Jahan, family, his courtiers and staff of three thousand. Studded with costly stones the walls and the intricate workmanship are a delight to the visitor’s eye. The fort was the sight of the Indian rebellion of 1857 and the impressive Lahore Gate.

    Jama Masjid
The architect of much of Old Delhi and Red Fort, Shah Jahan built Jama Masjid between 1644 and 1656. The majestic structure situates on a hill west of the Red Fort. Being the largest mosque of India, Jama Masjid can accommodate 25,000 worshippers at one time. Red sandstone ladders lead to entries on the south, north and east sides of the Masjid. There is huge courtyard inside with two white and red striped sandstone minarets. At each corners of the Masjid, there are smaller towers.

    Rashtrapati Bhavan
King George V of England ordered after his first visit in 1911 ordered that capital of India should be moved from Calcutta to Delhi. E. Lutyens was commissioned to diagram the new government center, which he planned in Rajpath. Between 1921 and 1929, Lutyens and Sir Herbert Baker built Rashtrapati Bahvan on Raisina Hill. Created for the Viceroy is now the residence of the President of India.

    Qutb Minar
Built between 1193 and 1369 the Qutb Minar is a colossal tower that was to mark Islamic rule over Delhi and celebrate the victory by Qutab-ud-din over the city’s last Hindu kingdom. The tower is well decked with calligraphy of verses from Quran. There are five different stories; the upper two are of white marble while the first three are of red sandstone. At the foot of the Miner lies the India’s oldest mosque Quwwat-ul-Islam.

    Humayun’s Tomb
One of the most beautiful preservations of Mughal architecture is the famous Humayun’s Tomb. The tomb is supposed to be the forerunner of the Taj Mahal of Agra.
